About

This Week in Football is a collection of some of the best in football currently outside the walls of AFL clubs or broadcasters. Each week a curated grab bag from regular contributors and special guests will provide insight into and beyond the game on subjects of their choosing.

Contributors

Ryan Buckland wrote his first piece of sports commentary – the topic: Dennis Commetti – in Year 7 and he’s been pretending to be a sportswriter ever since. Previously found at The Roar, Onballers (RIP) and The West Australian, Ryan was a small but solid contributor to Footballistics and has provided rent-a-quote services to other media outlets through the years.

In the real world he’s an economist and management consultant.

Emlyn Breese works in public policy and data analysis in the last bastion of civilisation in a barbarous world – the middle-ring suburbs of Melbourne. Having had the Demons inflicted upon him by unsuspecting immigrant parents, he is a firm believer that Max Gawn is the greatest player, and possibly person, to have ever lived.

He spends his free time wrestling with the moral dilemma of allowing his two young children to follow the same path. This choice is complicated (or possibly clarified) by the knowledge that if not for Melbourne, they’d likely be Collingwood supporters. Emlyn writes semi-regularly on CreditToDuBois, which attempts to match accessible football insights with engaging visuals.

Cody Atkinson is a journalist and analyst based in the Australia’s greatest city, Canberra. Cody has spent too much thinking about football for the last 30 years, and too much time writing and broadcasting about it for the last decade. He probably should spend more time playing footy.

Cody’s work was featured in the book Footballistics (2018), amongst other outlets and publications. His work is regularly on the ABC.

Sean Lawson has been moonlighting as an AFL statistics guy at HPN Footy for several years and the ABC since 2018, and also contributed to Footballistics. He is generally somewhat reasonable about sport but is fully convinced the NRL is a vast conspiracy to screw over the Canberra Raiders and possibly also him, personally.
